I come from a finite land of power and wonder. The Outer Banks are a set of barrier islands at the edge of the North Atlantic, washing away day by day, actively being swallowed by the ocean. They come to represent a constant reminder that the same sea that gave us the island for our home, fish for our survival, and surf for our souls can take it back whenever she so chooses. It is there that I found my love for photography. A craft introduced to me by my dad.
He was a canvas man. He poured his heart and soul into hand designing the sails and windshields that kept fishermen safe. The quality of his work when storms hit held the weight of whether they lived or died. His pride in this craft led him to push it to a level of mastery few people on this earth can hold a candle to.
Then there was photography. His relentless insistence on the need to document every moment we spent together with the latest and greatest SLR of the time. The childhood I had took me to many far and wonderful places, always with a camera pointing at my smile. A childhood we were both robbed of. Through circumstances beyond anyone's control we spent nearly 10 years apart. Since reuniting this has only made me appreciate every moment so much more.
My brother took Dad’s canvas work to new heights, pushing it to levels of ingenuity and beauty never seen before. I believe that it is my duty to do the same with his passion for photography. I truly believe that through the power of photography this man gave himself the motivation to push through those hard long days on ladders and floors. Every time he got to his desk it was always filled with photos of our smiles.
In hindsight, he was the smartest man in the room for spending so much of his time capturing the moment rather than being in it. The world I was born into looks a lot different than his. It has forgotten how to put memories into images, and I consider it my personal mission to retain that essence in every image I create. Thanks for being my creative vision dad.
